What is the Student Residence Card in Spain?
The Spanish Aliens Regulation states that students coming to Spain for the first time as students (unless they are short-term exchange students) are required to apply for a student residence card (TIE in Spanish for short).
The residence card or TIE is a document that every student who comes to Spain for the first time must apply for and hold. It is the equivalent of an ID card in Spain, which is a necessary proof of foreigner’s identity when going out, applying for schools, opening bank accounts, traveling, etc.
Note: If you are a short-term exchange student, you do not need to apply for a TIE if you are staying in Spain for less than 6 months, but if you are staying in Spain for more than 6 months, you will need to apply for a residence card.
Note: Before applying for a TIE, each student must be enrolled or attending a Spanish school (language school or public or private school) . The place to apply for a student residence card is the police station (Dirección General de la Policía) where you live.
