What exactly is “Mutua”?

The law requires that a company that employs workers must pay social security contributions monthly. Workers’ Social Security includes various protected situation, such as unemployment insurance, sick leave insurance, work injury insurance, parental maternity insurance, etc.

Mutua is a non-profit organization. They work with the National Social Insurance Institute to provide medical care and coverage for workers. For example, if a worker loses his job, he can approach the state to receive unemployment benefits. If a worker gets sick, he or she can apply to Mutua for compensation during the period of illness. A portion of the company’s monthly contribution to the worker’s social security is paid to Mutua. Therefore, Mutua is similar to a private social security institution.

What services does Mutua offer?

Mutua can be considered as a social security  agency. As such, it operates like an insurance company, and workers can go to them to apply for compensation if they have an accident at work or if they get sick.

Note: In fact, a portion of the monthly social insurance premiums paid by the company are paid to Mutua, so the company does not need to pay the extra premiums.

Mutua offers the following common services:

Medical services for workers’ sick leave, medical services for workers’ injuries, compensation for workers’ sick leave, compensation for workers’ injuries, vocational training, injury prevention training, etc.

The amount of services offered by each Mutua is similar, so companies can choose one according to their situation and select the items they need to insure.

Freelancers can apply to Mutua for benefits

Mutua provides protection for workers, but also for freelancers.  For example, if a freelancer (autonomo) is injured at work, sick and unable to work, etc. In case of unemployment for objective reasons, a freelancer can also apply for unemployment benefits from mutua.
