Spanish tax number
NIF stands for Número de Identificación Fiscal (Tax Identification Number or TIN). It’s a national code to identify individuals and legal entities for tax purposes, and it’s a compulsory number that you will need in every tax action.
NATURAL PERSON’S NIF
It’s the same number as your DNI (Spanish citizens ID number) or NIE number (ID number for foreigners).

LEGAL ENTITY’S NIF
The NIF for a legal entity is composed of a letter plus eight digits, totalling 9 alphanumeric digits.
The first digit indicates the type of organisation or company structure (e.g. A for public limited companies, or B for limited liability companies or SL).
Each type of entity has its own letter.
It should be noted that this NIF number is also the VAT number. In Spain, NIF and VAT are the same number. In many other countries there may be two separate numbers.
